Packaging Adhesives and
Sealants
Turn ‘Greener’
Food & Beverage Packaging (12/5/11)
Jeff Timm, Managing
Principal of Timm Consulting, highlights ASC’s Sustainability Conference &
Fall Convention and the newest innovation in packaging. He promotes sustainability solutions and
challenges the adhesives and sealants industry to implement such
solutions. The notion that adhesives are
the last technology considered when preparing packages is rapidly
reversing. Retailers like Wal-Mart are
leading the industry in this change of thought. Timm also focuses on hot topics from ASC’s Fall Convention, emphasizing recycle
contamination, renewable hot-melt adhesives, and the absence of bio-based
renewable polymer chemistries. He
concludes with a call for proactive vendors, believing that adhesive companies
will need to be assiduous with suppliers regarding development opportunities
and innovation in the sustainability arena to keep competitive in a market trending
towards greener solutions.
Food & Beverage Packaging’s Rick Lingle adds to Timm’s piece,
promoting H.B. Fuller’s new Liquamelt adhesive®. Liquamelt is a low-density, soy-based
adhesive. It is composed of 40%
biorenewable ingredients, heats during adhesion, and quickly sets. Through its development and distribution of
Liquamelt, H.B. Fuller is promoting sustainability, as the product decreases
adhesive usage by over 50%.
